about

Times when there was no such thing coronavirus lockdown or my spinal damage. We were young enjoying the days of wine & roses lol. Our seasonal apres ski bands played over 300 gigs in a row. Driving the treacherous roads constantly putting on snow chains & then taking them off was a neat fun adventure. We would start around 4pm by loading all the bands gear into the van from our lodge where we all slept in the same small one room. Drive to the first gig while doing the snow chain tire thing. Set up the gear at the first bar. Perform two sets to wild excited young people drinking & skiing. Even saw a few bar brawls. Then take the gear down, load it in the van & drive to the second gig. Set up again & play two more sets of top 40 dance funk stuff. This time to even more wild drunk young people shenanigans. Take down all the equipment, load it in the van, drive home doing the snow chain tire thing. But it was not over... we had to then unload all the gear back into our humble lodge as it's too cold to leave in the van. So our six day a week, two gigs a day thing lasted from 4pm to 4am. We also did a separate Sunday jazz gig to top it all off. We did this for six months & got to know each other really, really well. It was definitely boot camp for musicians. We developed weird hobbies like tobogganing down black ski runs at 4am. We bolted on real skies to the toboggan equipped with padded seats, steering, radio & toy laser guns. We would snow shoe to tiny refuge shacks & sleep over night in the middle of nowhere on a mountain. Back at the lodge we had a VCR with only one film, One flew over the cuckoos nest which we watched too many times. Too many stories to tell. I feel blessed to have been part of something so fun, wild & exciting. In a time before lockdown, looking down at phones & Netflix lol.
